Today in history, The Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral reaches the coast of Brazil and claims the region for Portugal in 1500.

Today in history, The Times (see picture below), London’s oldest running newspaper, publishes its first edition in 1788.


Today in history, William Lloyd Garrison (see picture below) publishes the first edition of a journal entitled The Liberator, calling for the complete and immediate emancipation of all slaves in the United States in 1830.


Today in history, President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves in the Confederacy in 1863.
